Discovering that two tiny heartbeats reside inside you can be a shock, but knowing what to expect has a calming effect. Our doctors share this information to help you prepare emotionally, and have the healthiest pregnancy possible.

What to expect during twin gestation

  • If you are in your 30s or older, you are more likely to conceive twins naturally. Because cycles are not as regular, you could ovulate from two follicles at the same time.
  • Extra folic acid is essential to minimize risk of birth defects.
  • You may have more visits to the obgyn for careful monitoring and testing.
  • The hormone that triggers morning sickness is elevated with twins. These moms are also more likely to have heartburn, back pain, and maternal anemia.
  • First trimester spotting is common with multiples. Be sure to call your doctor, though, if it is accompanied by cramping.
  • You will probably gain more weight than with a singleton pregnancy.
  • There is higher risk of gestational diabetes and preeclampsia.
  • You could go into labor early – at 36 or 37 weeks rather than the usual 40.
  • A breech position, and thus the need for a C-section delivery, is more likely.
