Chicago gynecologist helps patients understand types of ovarian cysts and best treatments
There are many reasons to keep annual well-woman visits with your gynecologist. One of these is ovarian cysts. Most women develop them at some point in their lives. Sometimes cysts can cause issues and require treatment. There are different types of ovarian cysts. Northwestern Women’s Health Associates, in Chicago can diagnose and treat cysts if necessary. We are committed to helping educate you on ways to address potential female health problems.
Types of ovarian cysts
- Follicle cyst – During your cycle, an egg will grow in the ovary. We call this a follicle. The follicle will, in most cases, break open and release the egg. If it does not open, it can form a cyst.
- Corpus luteum cysts – The follicle sac will typically disappear after the egg is gone. If it does not dissolve and the opening of the follicle closes, additional fluid may form inside the sac.
- Dermoid cysts – These are sac-like and they can contain foreign tissue.
- Cystadenomas – Non-cancerous cysts that form on the outside of the ovary.
- Endometriomas – Uterine tissue growing outside of the uterus, attaches to the ovaries and forms a cyst.
How we diagnose ovarian cysts
- Routine pelvic examinations. Sometimes we notice swelling on one of your ovaries. At this point we recommend further testing.
- Ultrasound tests. An imaging test that uses sound waves to show a picture of your ovaries.
- Hormone level test. This checks for hormone-related issues that could be causing cysts.
- CA-125 blood test. If we feel there is a possibility of cancer, we will use this test to help screen.
The type of cysts, the number of cysts, and the length of time they are present determine our potential treatment plan for you.
