Highland and northwest Indiana residents ask what causes abnormal uterine bleeding
Highland and northwest Indiana residents have found women’s health care and resources through Northwestern Women’s Health Associates. We diagnose and treat many conditions including abnormal uterine bleeding.
Abnormal uterine bleeding refers to any blood flowing from the uterus through the vagina that is heavy or unusual. This may occur at any point, even during a regular monthly period. Symptoms of abnormal uterine bleeding include bleeding that occurs between periods, very heavy menstrual bleeding, and heavy bleeding that lasts longer than seven days.

Diagnosing abnormal bleeding
Your doctor assesses your medical history and symptoms. A woman’s age, health, and symptoms determine the tests ordered to diagnose the cause of your abnormal bleeding. For example, for teenagers or women approaching menopause, abnormal bleeding due to hormonal changes is common, whereas pregnancy is common for women in their 20s and 30s.
- Blood work may be requested to check for pregnancy and to ensure your blood count is not too low if you are experiencing heavy bleeding.
- An ultrasound shows possible problems with the ovaries and uterus.
- An endometrial biopsy is done to remove a tiny piece of the uterine lining for laboratory testing in women age 35 and older.
- Hysteroscopy is performed by inserting a thin, lighted telescope through the vagina to examine the cervix and uterus.
Common causes of uterine bleeding
Often abnormal uterine bleeding may be caused by hormonal changes or even pregnancy. General causes of uterine bleeding may include the following:
- Hormonal changes
- Birth control pills
- Not releasing an egg during a menstrual cycle
- Pregnancy
- Fibroids or polyps
- Rare causes include a thyroid disorder, cervical problems, or cancer
Treatment depends upon your test results. Your physician will determine the best course of action. If you are experiencing abnormal bleeding, contact Northwestern Women’s Health Associates at 312-440-9400
