According to cumulative data from the CDC, we can see that the instance of twin gestation has increased significantly in the last thirty-five years. Where twins were, in the 1980s, generally seen in every 80 births, we now see twins in every 30. This increase has been attributed to an increased maternal age, as well as the increase in the use of assisted reproduction.

During pregnancy with twins, parents may expect:

• Increased frequency of visits and tests in our Chicago, office. Due to the potential for complications in the twin pregnancy, your physician may schedule checkups on a more frequent basis. This will allow us to more closely monitor the growth of each fetus and, through testing, identify potential concerns quickly. There will be regular ultrasounds to assess growth. We will often start fetal monitoring in the last 1-2 months.
• Heightened precautions. Today more than ever, we have the technology to better manage various conditions of pregnancy. Mothers-to-be tend to be able to remain more active as their baby develops. In the case of twins, we work closely with our patients to determine the healthiest level of activity as the pregnancy progresses. The goal of precautions is to support the health of mother and babies while also minimizing the risk of preterm labor and other complications.
• Timing is an important factor in any pregnancy. In the single pregnancy, however, there may be less concern related to the exact due date, with many cases extending beyond 40 weeks. When twins are expected, we may discuss the benefits of delivery via induction C section at approximately 38 or 39 weeks.
