Emergency Contraception

If your birth control fails, you still have options to prevent pregnancy. One option is the "morning after pill," of which there are two available. While not guaranteed to prevent pregnancy, morning after pills are more effective the sooner you take them. Neither option prevents the transmission of sexually transmitted infections.

Ella® is available in our office or at select pharmacies with a prescription from your doctor, and works well if taken within 5 days of unprotected intercourse to prevent pregnancy. While not perfect with failure rate of 1.4%, it is more effective the sooner it is taken after intercourse.
Plan B One-Step® has been used for years to prevent unintended pregnancy, and works well if taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. It is available over the counter at most pharmacies or with a prescription from your doctor, typically for a lesser cost. The failure rate is quoted at 2-3%.
