Chicago gynecologist aims for the least invasive treatment for fibroids
Many women develop uterine fibroids at some time in their lives. Often, fibroids do not cause any symptoms and there is no need for treatment. However, there are times where uterine fibroids become an issue. Northwestern Women’s Health Associates , located in Chicago, is committed to providing each woman with a personalized treatment plan to achieve optimal health. If you are worried that you may have uterine fibroids, we can help diagnose and provide treatment.
What are uterine fibroids?
They can be called leiomyomas and myomas. These muscular tumors grow on your uterus. They may vary in size, shape, and location. They can show up on the uterus, uterine wall, or its surface, or attach to the uterus. They rarely turn into cancer. However, they may become painful, press against other organs in the pelvic region, bleed, or cause issues during pregnancy.
Treatments available
- Watchful waiting – If you have few or no symptoms, we may recommend monitoring fibroids carefully through routine pelvic exams. We usually suggest this treatment for women nearing menopause, as menopause often causes fibroids to shrink, reducing symptoms.
- Abnormal bleeding – Fibroids can cause abnormal bleeding. If this is occurring we can treat it with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug therapy, birth control hormones, or possibly an intrauterine device that dispenses progesterone. Sometimes, surgery is needed instead.
- Infertility – If your fibroids are causing difficulty conceiving, we may surgically remove them.
- Surgical removal – We often can use small incisions with laparoscopy. In very severe cases, hysterectomy is the final intervention.
