Three birth control methods, demystified: An introduction to long-lasting and permanent options

While we cannot choose the family we are born into, at Northwestern Women’s Health Associates, we feel it is every individual’s right to build the family of their dreams as they see fit and on their own “schedule.” So, as OBGYNs, we play an important clinical role in family planning. From our office in the Streeterville neighborhood, we advise patients who are looking for “birth control near me in Chicago, Illinois,” on their many options. These options should align with their goals, personal preferences, overall health status/concerns, lifestyle, and more. Here, we provide a quick glimpse into some of these methods.

OBGYN Near Me For Birth Control in Chicago Area

No. 1: Hormonal birth control

The pill is largely the most recognized of these options, which are formulated with synthetic hormones. While such oral contraception has a high rate of successfully preventing pregnancy, compliance is essential. Women must keep track of these little pills and also remember to take them on an ongoing basis. For women who may be concerned about this feature of oral contraceptives, injections may be a more appealing and predictable option. Instead of taking pills daily, these patients only need to have injections of synthetic progesterone quarterly (once every three months). Other comparatively hassle-free options include hormone patches and vaginal rings, which are replaced each week or once every three weeks, respectively. Implants are a longer-lasting option, which protects against pregnancy for three years by continuously releasing synthetic progesterone (progestin) called etonogestrel into the bloodstream.

No. 2: Intrauterine Devices

IUDs are also considered to be long-acting and reversible methods for pregnancy prevention and birth control. They are discreet, T-shaped devices placed and kept in the uterus. When inserted, the IUD releases either the hormone progesterone or non-hormonal copper to prevent sperm from entering the uterus and fertilizing an egg. Depending on the brand that is used, the IUD remains effective at preventing pregnancies for anywhere from three to ten years.

No. 3: Sterilization

Unlike the other methods mentioned here, this is a form of permanent birth control. So, it is not meant to be a reversible procedure. The process of getting one’s “tubes tied” generally involves closing off or removing the fallopian tubes, through which eggs travel from the ovaries to the uterus. In doing so, the sperm can no longer reach and fertilize an egg. Due to our considerable onsite expertise and capabilities at Northwestern Women’s Health Associates, laparoscopic-assisted tubal sterilization may be performed through a single small opening near the belly button. Using a thin and lighted laparoscope, one of our specialists will access the fallopian tubes and then place a clip or band on each to close off these organs and prevent future pregnancies for good. As with many laparoscopic procedures, treatment is not invasive or aggressive. So it does not require downtime and recovery. You can even return home on the same day as your treatment.
