What are uterine fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are also called leiomyomas and myomas. They can present in your uterus, on the uterine wall, be attached to the uterus, or on the surface. They are a type of muscular tumor that rarely develops into cancer. A lot of women have uterine fibroids and no symptoms. They can cause issues though when they become painful, bleed, or complicate pregnancy. They can range in number and size, from one to many and tiny to large. This is a condition that up to 70 percent of all women have by the age of 50.
Types of uterine fibroids
- Intramural fibroids – These are the most common and grow on the wall of the uterus.
- Subserosal fibroids – These grow on the outside of the uterus and often cause issues when they become larger and apply pressure to surrounding organs.
- Submucosal fibroids – These grow just beneath the uterine lining. These can lead to abnormal menstrual bleeding and other complications.
- Pedunculated fibroids – These grow on thin stalks, inside or outside the uterus.
