Laparoscopic surgery is a modern minimally invasive gynecologic technique, available at Northwestern Women’s Health Associates in Chicago. This type of surgery is carried out through small incisions, rather than the larger openings needed in laparotomy. It is the most common procedure used to diagnose and remove mild to moderate endometriosis.

Laparoscopic surgery includes operations within the abdominal or pelvic cavity. A minimally invasive surgery forms a smaller scar, which helps the patient recover faster. This type of surgery is performed through a telescopic rod lens system. It is usually connected to a video camera, to transmit a clear image of internal organs onto a monitor.

The hysteroscopy procedure may be performed for a number of reasons, such as to remove polyps or fibroids, locate an IUD or remove adhesions. Using a hysteroscope, a thin instrument that reaches the uterus through the vagina, your physician is able to gain a detailed view of the uterus. This image is transferred to a television monitor and is magnified. Small instruments are then placed through the hysteroscopy to remove lesions under direct visualization.
